Hyundai has just launched an extended family to the Elantra line in the United States. Available now is the 5 door hatchback and coupe, with a 1.8 litre 4 cylinder petrol engine under the hood, putting out 148 hp and 177 Nm of torque to the front wheels via six speed manual or automatic transmission. Complementing the looks are European tuned suspensions, which means that driving should be a pleasure.

The Inokom i10; slated to be an urban warrior that's kind on your pocket.
In an ideal world, we’d all be driving 500bhp, 5.9-litre V12 Aston Martin DBS‘s (at least in the TCG universe…), scurrying about the city doing 12mpg (that’s 20-litres/100km) without a care for the world nor the depth of our pockets. As luck would have it, reality is a real bitter pill to swallow. Red or blue pill, the reality is this – we all need that cheap, cheerful runabout. You can brag all you want about your carbon-churning 12-cylinder monster but deep down in your pockets where it hurts, it yells, “less cylinders, more miles please!”
And thus the world has its unfair share of little ‘uns. Some small and economical. Some plain ugly, uninspired, cheap, practical. Take your pick, if you dare. Ultimately, it boils down to dollars and cents (sense). At times when you truly think about it, the dollar bit doesn’t make any sense at all. Not when RM40,000 of your hard earned money can merely you a 1,000-litre odd new car that can barely sit four adults and made from recycled aluminium. Blame it on our protectionist Malaysian import laws. Blame it on the rain. Frankly, I’d trade that for a good conditioned 15-year old continental (ok, I’ve done that already). But that’s just me.

While doing our rounds over the weekend, we spotted this rather handsome, unregistered 2011/2012 Hyundai Coupe. Looks pretty sweet and muscular although we feel the metallic grey paintjob doesn’t do the lines quite much justice. The Hyundai Coupe, also known as the Genesis in the US, is a 2+2 coupe. Power plant options include the turbocharged inline four 210bhp 2.0T Manual with a 6-speed manual transmission, according to sources. For power hungry folks (like me) 3.8-liter, V6, 306bhp option with 6-speed automatic transmission should satisfy.
No official word on availability nor pricing from Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors but apparently it will not be sold in Malaysia. This particular coupe is left hand drive and apparently is used only for driver training. Boohoo to that. Here’s hoping that, at least, the entry level Veloster coupe would be available in our shores soon.
