Audi has officially announced the latest derivative of the A8, the S8 Plus. That’s right, Plus. Much like the R8 Plus, the S8 Plus features an uprated engine, new bodykit and Dynamic Package; combining to lift the top speed to a frankly ridiculous 304km/h. The lack of an RS8 badge indicates that Audi are trying to maintain the premiere sedan principles of the A8, while lifting performance to RS standards. All this without extensive stiffening and aggressive aero.
Under the bonnet of the Audi S8 Plus is the same 4.0-litre TFSI V8 engine that powers the regular S8, with output boosted by 85hp to an obscene 605hp, with torque sitting at a hearty 700Nm. This enables the S8 Plus to achieve a 0-100km/h time of just 3.8 seconds, giving it better acceleration than not just the S8 but also its direct rivals, the BMW 760i and Mercedes–AMG S 65.
With the added power comes improved ride and handling, largely provided by Audi’s Sports Adaptive Air Suspension combined with its Dynamic Steering system, tailored specifically for the S8 Plus. Carbon-ceramic brakes keep all that power in check, nestled inside 21-inch wheels. Naturally, Audi gave the S8 Plus a wide array of visual upgrades inside and out to set it apart from “lesser” versions, and is offering it in an exclusive matte silver finish.
The S8 Plus will offer numerous other luxuries as standard, such as a full leather interior package, Matrix LED headlights, a BOSE surround system and keyless entry. A sports exhaust is also standard on all S8 Plus models. Whether the S8 Plus will make it to Malaysia is a whole other story, especially considering the low sales volume of A8 models. Perhaps it’s time for the grey importers to do their jobs.
