Ferrari 488 Spider

Surprising? No. Exciting? Certainly. Ferrari‘s much-anticipated topless version of the highly rated 488 GTB has finally been revealed, with the Italian firm set to officially launch the 488 Spider at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. The 488 Spider will undoubtedly go head-to-head with the McLaren 650S Spider and to a lesser degree, the Lamborghini Huracan Spyder.

Ferrari has decided fit the same folding roof system from the 458 Spider into the 488 Spider, but thanks to the new aluminum spaceframe, the 488 Spider’s torsional rigidity has been increased by 23 percent over its predecessor, promising even sharper handling. Same as before, the powered roof can be stowed away in 14 seconds. That being said, we’re not sure whether the roof may be folded while the car is moving, which was something rather disappointing in previous topless Ferrari models.

Beyond that, the 488 Spider boasts the same goodies as the hardtop model. A 3.9-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 sits at its heart, sending 661hp and 760Nm of torque to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Even in this roofless model, the century sprint is over in just 3.2 seconds, compared to an even three seconds in the 488 GTB. The top speed is a hairdo-ruining 327km/h.

Ferrari will be unveiling the 488 Spider in the flesh at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Until then, we have these gorgeous photographs and teaser video fresh from Maranello.
