Next-Gen BMW 7 Series Ready For Debut

on

BMW has finally broken its silence on the next-gen 7 Series, with the Bavarian manufacturer announcing a reveal date of 10th June via a teaser video published on YouTube. From the teaser alone, we are able to confirm that the latest 7 Series will be available in 750Li form, and will feature the German firms Laserlight technology first seen on the i8.

The sixth-generation BMW 7 Series is set to go on sale later this year, with the Malaysian market probably seeing a slightly delayed launch date. Key among the goals for the new 7 Series is a significant weight reduction via the use of a combination of aluminium, magnesium, high-strength steel and carbonfibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP). Weight savings are expected to be in excess of 100kg.

The new model will be offered with a range of turbocharged four, six, eight and 12-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, all with a standard nine-speed automatic transmission and the option of rear or four-wheel drive. The petrol engines are derived from a new modular architecture with a 500cc individual cylinder capacity. Today’s 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine will also be utilised (updated, of course), along with a new 4.0-litre V8 and a 6.0-litre V12. The V8 and the V12 engines are also set to be used by Rolls-Royce.

On paper, BMW appears to have attempted to update the 7 Series without changing too much of its key ingredients. Whether it is enough to take on the upcoming Audi A8 and hugely successful Mercedes-Benz S-Class is yet to be seen.
