Launch: BMW 1 Series

on

Kuala Lumpur, 12 June, 2015 – BMW Malaysia has officially unveiled the latest installment in the 1 Series programme, in the shape of a facelifted 120i M Sport. That’s right, the 120i will be the only 1 Series model on offer, with BMW ditching the less powerful 116i after realising us Malaysians like a little extra punch.

Being a facelift, much hasn’t changed with the essence of the car. What has changed, is the exterior. A reshaped kidney grille is flanked by new, slimmer LED headlamps with rings that are now on the same level. There’s also a new, larger-intake front bumper, with new L-shaped rear lamps at the rear, brandishing double LED tubes.

Being an M Sport, you get 18-inch twin-spoke alloys with 225/40 front and 245/35 rear tyres, a slightly more aggressive bodykit, M Sport suspension, the high-gloss Shadow Line package and a chrome tailpipe. Inside, you’ll find anthracite headlining, alcantara-upholstered sports seats, M-badged door sills, aluminium interior trim with matte Estoril Blue accents, an M leather steering wheel and an instrument panel with red highlights and chrono scaling.

Under the hood sits a direct-injected 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo engine that produces 177hp from 4,800-6,450rpm and 250Nm of torque from 1,500-4,500 rpm, with power going to the rear wheels via an eight-speed auto gearbox. The century sprint is dispatched in 7.2 seconds, while top speed sits at a slightly low 222 km/h. BMW claim you’ll be able to plow through 100km with 5.9 litres of fuel, aided in part by the start/stop system.

When it comes to kit, the 120i M Sport comes well-prepared. Found inside is auto dual-zone air-con, keyless entry and start,as well as auto lights and wipers. Also onboard is cruise control with a braking function, front and rear parking sensors, and a Light package comprising reading, vanity mirror, ambient, footwell, exit and boot lights.

There is also an 8.8-inch Navigation System Professional with the now common touch-enabled iDrive knob. This system offers DVD, MP3, Bluetooth, USB and AUX connectivity. Sound is piped in through seven speakers. As before, the Driving Experience Control offers Comfort, Sport and Eco Pro modes. Safety-wise, the 120i comes fit with six airbags (two front, two side, two curtain), and DSC (including ABS, ASC, Cornering Brake Control and Dynamic Traction Control).

Unfortunately, this will likely be the last we’ll see of the rear-wheel-driven 1 Series, with the next generation expected to be driven by the front wheels, much like the 2 Series and X1. Being locally-assembled, the 120i M Sport is priced at RM219,800, OTR with GST but without insurance. Colour options are as follows: Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Glacier Silver, Mineral Grey and Estoril Blue. All BMW models sold officially in Malaysia now come with a five-year unlimited mileage factory warranty and five years/100,000 km of free servicing.
