Launch: 2015 Toyota Camry

on

Petaling Jaya, 2nd April, 2015 – UMW Toyota Motor has finally launched the 2015 Toyota Camry, with three variants on offer, including the Camry Hybrid. All variants are CKD models, featuring refreshed looks, an advanced new engine, added kit, and the debut of a Hybrid variant, which replaces the previous 2.5-litre petrol.

First off, styling; Toyota have gone for more of a evolution over revolution with styling, with everything sharpened up, yet still very much Toyota. Interestingly, we notice that more and more Toyota models feature Lexus-like styling. It’s not extremely obvious, but something noticeable. While this may be seen as some as the cheapening of the Lexus brand, we think it’s a good thing, because Lexus models these days look rather spectacular.

To understand the difference between all variants, we first need to take a look at the powertrains. The 2.0E and 2.0G get a new 6AR-FSE 2.0-litre four-cylinder direct injection petrol engine. The 2.0-litre produces up to 165hp and 199Nm of torque at 4,600rpm (17hp and 9Nm more than before), with power being channeled via a six-speed Super ECT unit instead of the previous four-speed auto. The new engine is capable of switching between power-heavy and efficiency-heavy cycles, helping it achieve a combined ECE-rated fuel consumption of 7.2 litres per 100km, down from 8.3 litres per 100km.

Next we take a look at the 2.5 Hybrid, the first Toyota hybrid to be assembled in Malaysia. This brings together a 2AR-FXE 2.5 litre direct injection four-cylinder petrol engine, rated at 158hp and 213Nm at 4,500rpm, and a 141hp/270Nm electric motor, an eCVT gearbox, and a nickel-metal hydride battery. These systems achieve a total output of a shade over 202hp, with combined fuel consumption sitting at 5.2 litres per 100km.

While interior trim levels differ between the variants, no matter which one you choose, you get auto dual-zone climate control with rear air vents, keyless entry and start, rear-seat Isofix mounts, and body-coloured front and rear parking sensors. The 2.0E comes fit with manually-adjustable fabric seats (driver six-way, front passenger four-way), a basic radio unit with CD/MP3, USB and iPod functionality, as well as six speakers.

The 2.0E also happens to be the only variant without VSC, traction control, hill start assist and emergency stop signal, and makes do with two airbags. Unfortunately, security and solar film is an optional extra on this variant. Talk about bare minimum. A notch higher is the 2.0G, which benefits from eight-way power-adjustable leather seats, cruise control, chrome trim, and security and solar film as standard. The 2.0G shares the same 16-inch wheels, self-levelling HID projector headlamps with DRLs, twin tailpipes, and sound system with the 2.0E. However, the 2.0G stands out a little with VSC, traction control, hill start assist and emergency stop signal, although the airbag count still sits at two.

The Camry range topper has been changed this time around, with the 2.5V being replaced by the 2.5 Hybrid. The 2.5 Hybrid has all the toys, with automatic twin-projector LED headlamps, auto wipers, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a new seven-inch touch-screen with navigation, Bluetooth (with phone controls on steering wheel), Mirror Link and reverse camera, a 10-speaker JBL Green Edge Tech sound system, footwell and inner door handle illumination, a Panasonic Nanoe air ioniser and Qi wireless charging.

Other perks exclusive to the range-topping Hybrid are Eco and EV modes, striking two-tone 17-inch alloys, a collapsible front passenger headrest, a powered rear sun blind and pull-up rear side window blinds. Being a hybrid, sacrifices do need to be made, with boot space being reduced by 94 litres to 421 litres. The Hybrid does boast seven airbags (including a driver’s knee airbag) and a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, in addition to all the aforementioned safety equipment.

The 2015 Toyota Camry will be available in Grey Metallic (new), Attitude Black, Silver Metallic, Medium Silver Metallic and White Pearl CS (for a premium of RM848). Assembled in Shah Alam, the 2015 Toyota Camry is priced at RM149,900 for the 2.0E, RM159,900 for the 2.0G and RM174,900 for the 2.5 Hybrid. All prices are on-the-road, inclusive of insurance and GST.
