It’s pretty hard to believe that one of the greatest all-American icons is celebrating its 50th year in continuous production this year. I’m talking about none other than the Ford Mustang. To mark this rich heritage, Ford is bringing the Mustang to a global audience, for the very first time.
Call us lucky, but Malaysia is one of the select few right-hand drive markets that will receive the new Mustang. It also means we won’t need to depend on grey imports to own one (if you have the dosh that is).
Built at Flat Rock Assembly Plant in the US, the Mustang is one of the world’s most popular cars, with figures hitting more than nine million units sold. A true blue sports car with its distinctive design and high performance, the Mustang has captured hearts — from the racetrack to silver screen, from the airwaves to toy boxes.
Malaysia will get both the fastback and convertible variants, with a choice of a 5.0-litre V8 delivering 435hp and 528Nm torque; or a turbocharged, fuel-efficient 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine producing 310hp and 434Nm. I don’t know about you, but anything less than a wallet-emptying, gas-guzzling V8 is blasphemous.
Regardless, it is fabulous that this American icon will have official presence here.
The new Mustang is the most advanced version yet, sporting world-class handling, more precise steering control and enhanced ride comfort.
The rubber burner will be officially hitting Malaysian showrooms in December. However, the muscle car can be previewed at Publika, Solaris Dutamas from March 11-15.
