Some say it’s the ultimate, original hot hatch – the legendary Peugeot 205 GTi – that scorched the tarmac (and dirt) 30 years ago. Well, the French automaker is reinterpreting the icon as the more dramatic Peugeot 208 GTi 30th.
The tiny but mighty 205 GTi quickly became a benchmark in its class and also became every racer boy’s dream hatch. The original 1.6 GTI was launched in 1984, powered by the XU5J engine that produced 104 hp(77 kW ). There were other iterations of the engine: a 115 bhp (86 kW) and later came a 1.9 GTI with an XU9JA engine producing 126 hp (94 kW) .
Peugeot also produced 200 road-going 205 Turbo 16 models for homologation. The race rally version took multiple victories in the WRC from 1984-1986.
So, to celebrate the launch of the new Peugeot 208 GTi 30th, Peugeot has released an action-packed, James Bond-style video with a military helicopter chasing down the hot hatch, and firing missiles for good margin. You’ve got to watch it.
Frankly, it’s epic.
Will the reimagining of the 205 GTi in its new modern form recapture the magic of old? We’ll see.
