Grassroots racing at its best

Popular grassroots motorsports racing series ‘Saturday Night Fever’ is now known as ‘SNF’. The 2014 Series was officially launched along with the 2013 Championship winners awards presentation at Sepang International Circuit yesterday, 8 February 2014.

A growing brand
Ignition.my, organisers of the popular door-to-door racing event said that the simplified brand name allows the brand to expand its activities and products to more than just Saturday night racing, a series inspired by the original Saturday night races at the now defunct Batu Tiga Speedway.

An evolving series
SNF has established itself as the grassroots circuit race series to watch and participate in since its humble beginnings in 2011. Since then, it has evolved into becoming an avenue for race enthusiasts to experience intense door-to-door racing in both cars and motorbikes.

Safety first
The renowned series has also upped the ante in terms of vehicle and driver safety, introducing compulsory installation of roll cages for all cars and proper racing attire for drivers. SNF is sanctioned by Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM) and Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM).

While the brand has evolved, the principal vision and objectives have not changed – to take racing off the streets, to encourage and grow grassroots motorsports and make racing for all enthusiasts affordable.

SNF for the rest of us
For the 2014 season, SNF will see a new grassroots race series targeted at entry-level racers, for regions outside of Klang Valley. Called ‘SNF Touge Battle’, the series will take place at kart circuits such as UniMAP circuit in Perlis and Melaka International Motorsport Circuit in Ayer Keroh.

SNF Principal Director, Adian Yein said, “This allows SNF to expand to regions of enthusiasts that may not have previously been able to participate in SNF Racing due to geographical boundaries and logistical limitations. SNF Touge Battle provides a beginners introduction to door-to-door racing, which is what SNF advocates.”

Levelling the field
To level the playing field and encourage even closer racing as well as to keep costs down for competitors, SNF 2014 will see a control tyre regulation implemented for the first time. The official tyres for SNF 2014 is Archilles Radial for cars and Corsa Motorcycle Tires for motorbikes.

SNF Motorsports Director, Faisal Asri said, “The objective is to eliminate tyres as a performance factor, as well as to control rising costs. It’s easy to gain 1-second per lap with the right, more expensive tyre choice. By having a control tyre, teams can focus more on performance as a whole and of course driver skill.”
