Akio Toyoda: Toyota Cars Should Be Fun To Drive

Toyota CEO, Akio Toyoda with Aston Martin CEO, Dr. Ulrich Bez

Remember the AE86, Celica GT-Four and Supra? These are fine examples of Toyota cars of yesteryear which are still very much desired now. They are a brilliant to drive. Toyota seemed to have lost their touch and was branded, in a way, to someone who wants comfortable cars (read: dull and boring). However, hope was given to us at the recent 2011 Tokyo Motor Show where Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda said…

“There are many different ways of travelling from A to B, but a car must have an emotional presence that inspires drivers to enjoy the feeling of driving. I believe if it is not fun then it is not a car.” He went on saying that environmental and fuel-efficient driving should not take the fun out of driving. “I believe that no matter how advanced we can become, it is important to keep the feeling of excitement,” Toyoda said. “Ultimately there is not only one choice of technology or future direction. It is up to the consumer to decide. Personally I like the smell of gasoline and sound of an engine, so I hope this type of vehicle won’t disappear.”

With this, Toyota’s new slogan ‘Reborn’ and ‘Fun to drive, again’ will hopefully bring more interesting cars from the Japanese car maker.
