Volkswagen – Suzuki Partnership Gone Sour
Couple of years ago, when General Motors had gone under and Suzuki (which was under GM then) had to go. Volkswagen AG had acquired 19.9% stake in Suzuki then from GM. It was reported that Volkswagen AG is unhappy with the partnership due to difference in directions.
CEO Martin Winterkorn said, “there are differences with Suzuki going forward and we’re disappointed in the tie-up.” Suzuki CEO, Osamu Suzuki, on the other hand said in his blog that Suzuki was not treated equally in the venture.
As both are strong in making small cars, the partnership seemed like an ideal strategy to make both even stronger. However, only time will tell if things will work out that way.
