BMW Tinkering with Model Names?
BMW is pondering what to name a model below the 1 series, if it were to introduce one. Now, to many BMW enthusiasts (including yours truly), we are able to recognise a model immediately, say whether it is a 3 series or 5 series or, from the chassis code, like E90 or F10 (respectively). According to BMW’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Ian Robertson,
“There will be an evolution of naming across all brands. There are a lot of numbers that can be exploited in the future”. Since BMW is embarking on hybrid project using the “i” moniker, it is very likely that this drives the changes to the whole model range naming nomenclature.
Robertson, however, acknowledged that it is more difficult for BMW’s other brands like MINI and Rolls Royce. But, what this means to BMW enthusiasts is, we have to relearn the naming convention all over again, should the model names be changed.
